This month we would like to highlight some unique and unexpected collaborations.

The first is between Icelandic performance project Hatari and Palestinian singer Bashar Murad. The unique combination of Murad’s soulful and fragile singing coupled with the aggressive industrial beat and the shouting provided by the ever energetic Matthías Haraldsson simply knocks it out of the park. Despite the strange combination of languages and musical styles you can’t help but move your body to this killer beat.

The second is a self cover by Yoeko Kurahashi rehashing a song from her first album Rei, originally released in 2000, written in her characteristic jazz-cabaret style. Six years later, Yoeko collaborated with Takako Tate, a great singer and pianist in her own right, to create the definite version of this song. The new arrangement will send shivers down your spine every single time. Each of the performers is given her own private channel in the stereo mix (with Yoeko on the right and Takako on the left, even though it’s really hard to tell sometimes) and their desperate voices blend in a painfully tantalising harmony.

Some other notable collaborations are “Under the Sun” by Australian producer Jordan F and the UK based synthwave band Le Cassette, and “American Dreamers – Old Home Movie” from the soundtrack of Emir Kusturica’s 1993 film Arizona Dream, composed by Goran Bregović with narration by Johnny Depp.
